A Famous Name

A name was very famous,
in the days of World War Two.
Though people never met him,
his name was one we knew.
He wasn't a national hero,
but his name was on every tongue.
Even I knew it very well,
though I was very young.
He remained famous for years,
on into the Korean War.
His name was everywhere,
but I didn't know, what for.
It was written on the buses,
and freight cars of trains.
It was on the subway walls,
even on our War Planes.
It was written on most fences,
and on the restroom walls.
You'd see it in the phone booth,
if you had to make a call.
No matter where you went,
On land, or sea, or air,
you would see his name.
It was written everywhere.
It was started by a worker,
in some Boston Shipyard,
who wrote his name on crates,
while working very hard.
As the crates were shipped,
they went far and near,
displaying in big bold words,
"KILROY WAS HERE!"
