Busy Hands

In the impressionable years,
When I was very small,
When the family got together,
We really had a ball.
I'm sure though, with grandma,
It wasn't quite the same.
She had some spare time,
Before the family came.
The first one up at daybreak,
Preparing to feed the crew,
With bacon, eggs and biscuits,
and coffee on to brew.
When all of us had eaten,
And finally had our fill,
The table had to be cleared,
And dishes to wash, still.
Three times a day this happened,
with other things to do.
No more finishing one meal,
She had to start anew.
Ne'er once did she complain,
Nor ask for anything.
As she went on with her work,
We would hear her sing.
It never seemed to bother her,
Her daughters by her side.
They all joined in to sing,
And in each other confide.
Surely, there were moments,
Shared with God above.
Her burdens were much lighter.
She bore them on wings of love.
