Chores

I vividly remember,
When I was just a tyke,
The day I first soloed,
On my brand new bike.
I was, oh, so happy,
With nothing but big smiles.
I thought I was ready,
To ride for miles and miles.
All those dreams were shattered,
'Cuz, glancing at the clock,
Mama hollered after me.
"Don't you leave this block."
"Supper's almost ready."
Then to spite my wishes,
After the meal was eaten,
I had to do the dishes.
Eager to get a rolling,
That task I didn't shirk.
As I started to leave,
She asked, "You got homework ?"
One thing is for certain,
I've said it oft before.
A lot of good time was wasted,
'Cuz of doing chores.
The chores just kept coming,
As the years went by.
Now that I'm much older,
I know the reason, why.
They kept me out of trouble.
The lesson did not fail.
Other kids I know,
Have spent some time in jail.
