Walking Tall

Today's children don't know what they're missing,
not enjoying some things like we built.
With two boards, two blocks and some leather,
we crafted some toys, we called stilts.
The blocks were nailed to each board,
making the steps for our feet.
With the leather, straps formed stirrups.
When done the toy was complete.
With a little time and practice,
we were soon walking real tall,
knowing that if we lost our balance,
we were in for a very long fall.
As we grew older and braver,
our skills, we thought, needed proof.
Our stilts became much taller.
We mounted them from the garage roof.
Each step covered a great distance,
and walking wasn't at all hard.
With three or four cautious steps,
we moved across the whole yard.
With a few simple rules of safety,
they were not dangerous at all.
All you needed to remember,
was to step off, as you begin to fall.
Our minds were not hindered by fear,
placing limits on what we could do.
No OSHA, nor crack-pot lawyer,
was there, always threatening to sue.
Someday, someone will get rich,
and be famous too boot,
when they develop this toy,
and use it to help us commute.
