"You're Out !"

With a rag-tag bunch of boys,
and maybe a girl or two,
all of the neighbors kids,
did what they'd always do.

With an old broken bat,
and some semblance of a ball,
on some neighbor's vacant lot
we would gather, one and all.
With rakes, hoes and shovels,
the lot was prepared for play.
The owner?...He didn't mind.
It needed cleaning anyway.

When the field was laid out,
and we established each base,
we determined the batting order,
by running a short foot race.
Or, if we were real lucky,
and had enough to choose sides,
we player regular ball games,
where standard rules applied.

We didn't have "equipment,"
no uniforms or fancy hats,
no mitts or cleated shoes,
no regulation balls and bats.
The rules weren't in a book.
No Umpires got in our way.
There were no dugout benches.
We were all on the field of play.

There was no such thing as "Little League,"
nor adults with their grown-up ways.
We were just a bunch of kids,
having fun on our Summer days.
