Yoyos In The House
                        © By Grady L. Duncan                            9/29/2000
A few days ago, when I was young,

we boys found some new toys.

This new invention had just come out.

It was giving us lots of joy.
It took some skill to work it,

so we practiced for a long, long time,

Until we could master the skills,

and do all of the tricks just fine.
The Yoyo is a toy that's fun,

if you can control the thing.

But if your not real careful,

it becomes a weapon on a string.
Because of its unpredictable nature,

it was barred from inside our home.

Whoever makes up rules,

this one is not so dumb.

But rules are made to be broken,

so that just what we did.

After all, what could happen?

We were only little kids.
Mother was sitting mending something.

As we entered we were spied.

Without a moments hestitation,

she said,"Take those things outside !"
Bob, my much older brother,

said,"Look at what I can do."

Giving the yoyo a mighty whirl,

the string finally wore through.

The yoyo, went flying through the air,

hitting mother in the head.

All of a sudden she went limp.

We thought she was dead !
After several long minutes,

she finally came around.

All was real still and quiet.

We never made a sound.
What happened from that point on,

can be surmized by even a fool,

And from that day on,

we never, ever, broke that rule.
